Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Head of Accounting for our German team to lead our financial operations and ensure compliance with HGB and German tax regulations. In this key leadership role, you will be responsible for accurate financial reporting, risk management, and driving process improvements, while supporting strategic decision-making and leading a high-performing accounting team.
Your Tasks
Financial Management and Reporting 
  • Oversee the preparation and review of accurate financial records, including general ledger, accounts payable, and accounts receivable
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with HGB (German Commercial Code)
  • Manage intercompany account reconciliation and fixed asset accounting processes
  • Support senior management and stakeholders with financial analysis and insights
Compliance and Risk Management 
  • Ensure full compliance with German tax regulations, including VAT, corporate tax, and trade tax filings
  • Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies
  • Implement and maintain internal controls and risk management procedures
  • Ensure adherence to data protection regulations (GDPR) in financial processes
Leadership and Team Management 
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals
  • Establish clear performance objectives and provide regular feedback and coaching
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture within the accounting department
  • Oversee recruitment, training, and professional development of accounting staff
Strategic Support and Process Optimization 
  • Support budgeting and forecasting processes, providing variance analysis and strategic insights
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize accounting processes and systems
  • Evaluate and implement financial software solutions and automation tools
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures aligned with German standards
Cross-functional Collaboration 
  • Partner with senior leadership to support strategic business initiatives
  • Collaborate with international teams to ensure consistent global financial practices
  • Provide financial expertise for business development and investment decisions
  • Support M&A activities and due diligence processes as needed
Your Profile
  • Certified Bilanzbuchhalter (German Certified Accountant) or equivalent professional qualification
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • Expert knowledge of German GAAP (HGB) and international accounting standards
  • Minimum 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role
  • Deep expertise in German accounting standards (HGB) and tax regulations
  • Proven experience managing and developing accounting teams
  • Proficient in running finance ERP systems
  • Native/fluent German and business-level English proficiency
  • Advanced Excel skills and financial modelling capabilities
Nice to have
  • CPA, ACCA, or other international accounting certification
  • Experience in multinational corporations or German subsidiaries of international companies
  • Background in the technology/software industry, understanding of license revenue recognition and deferrals, SaaS companies
  • Experience with NetSuite or other cloud-based ERP systems
  • Knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP for consolidation purposes
  • Strong project management and change management skills
  • Experience with digital transformation and accounting automation
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for senior stakeholder engagement
